Back at it again with ANOTHER Digagami Alpha, this time taking a look at Mortal Shell!
As usual, we make a video for those who prefer Visuals + Audio over reading. I’m basically just writing out what I said in this video down below:
Mortal Shell immediately gave me nostalgia and made me feel like I was doing my first run in Dark Souls over again! The cluelessness of what was about to happen or come around the corner made it thrilling throughout the entire game!
I was only in beta, so I couldn’t go any further after I defeated the boss. At that time, I sat there for 2 more runs learning how the game worked. It’s like playing Dark Souls, but with more ways to negate damage, better graphics, and no constant invasions (From what the devs described).
This game almost plays exactly like Dark Souls, except there is a Harden Ability! The Harden ability turns you into stone, blocking all damage from the next enemy attack and stunning them.
Like I said in the video (You should watch it anyway), this game is probably the most difficult Souls-Like game I’ve played. The enemy stays unpredictable just like in Dark Souls, only in this game it seems animations clip into one another.
Of course, this could be due to a bug, and the fact that it’s still in beta. Either way, it has really challenged my reflexes by making me rage every time I die! Once you get the dodging down along with the Harden ability, you will find these enemies really easy to fight after a while!
Although I’m still confused on what the story even is behind Mortal Shell, I do know that they have their own version of the Fire Keeper! It’s this woman with a mask a weird ancient dress on, sadly I don’t have an image of her…
She explains how she revives you after you die blah blah blah. Anyways, the graphics are stunning (Again, watch the video) but to be expected of new-age games in 2020. Almost every game that has arrived now into the future with most likely have realistic graphics.
Items and Shells
The items in this game are mainly seen as troll items because the developer made it where “You have to use the item to reveal what it does”… Obviously, it wasn’t such a fun time using an item and finding out it switches out your shells.
Oooh! Speaking of Shells, this game has introduced an interesting way of using armor! You are actually this white hollow flesh figure who seems to take over dead soldiers and use them for battle!
Last but definitely not least, we can’t forget the bosses! Well, one boss because I’m in beta which is restricted to certain access of course… In this beta, you fight an “Enslaved Grisha” which was later known as the protector of some ice kingdom (Something like that I don’t really know…).
He can 2 shot you if you aren’t careful, and I’ve died about 3 times to him before realizing how easy he was! They still kept the souls-like element from Dark Souls when it comes to the bosses!
Overall, this souls-like game managed to rebound my interest in this abusive relationship of a genre! This little playthrough brought me joy after years since I’ve enjoyed a souls-like game!
